SuperM Gets Diverse Reviews From Western News Sites Regarding Album Sales Controversy
SuperM officially debuted with the song titled "Jopping" on October 4th. The global boy group made by SM Entertainment consisting of SHINee's Taemin , EXO's Kai and Baekhyun, NCT 127's Taeyong and Mark Lee and WayV's Ten and Lucas are also predicted to become "Avengers of K-Pop".

On Sunday (10/13) local time, Billboard announced that SuperM's debut mini album ranked number one on the Bilboard 200 chart for the week of October 19th. It became K-Pop group debut who won the highest position on the chart.

But behind the proud achievement, SuperM just did not get a positive response. SuperM has recently got controversy over the sale of the album. Western news websites are calling for group bundling tactics that they use to get top positions.

The American news site, The New York Times, reviews SuperM in an article and mentions that SuperM can sell 164,000 albums with only 4.9 million streaming. According to the media outlet, the bundle sales tactic was the reason that SuperM album sales jumped.

"The boy band's album 'The 1st Mini Album - SuperM' comes with a variety of packages and bundles. It produces a strong debut sales week, but the amount of streaming is quiet weak." said The New York Times review.

Meanwhile, the RollingStone media compared the number of SuperM streaming and their main competitor, Summer Walker. According to The RollingStone, Summer Walker which encourages fans to continue streaming their song "Over It" gets less than the maximum results when compared to the SuperM strategy.

"But in the end, the marketing strategy adopted by SuperM that emphasizes bundles and physical copies, was able to sweep the number of Summer Walker streams," said The RollingStone review.

BuzzfeedNews also commented on this issue. BuzzFeedNews reviews say that selling SuperM albums is "almost unheard of" when digital streaming remains the top.

SuperM itself prepares more than 60 merchandise and album bundles available for fans to buy on their official website. The bundle includes various posters and collection cards. They also have a ticket or album sales redemption for their arena tour and eight variations of the album itself. What do you think? (www.onkpop.com)
